Employment benefits - Cycle to work scheme

Cycle to work scheme benefit

Are you considering a healthier, more sustainable way of travelling?

Cycling is a great way to boost your mental and physical health. It also contributes to a greener planet and can help save you money on fuel, parking or public transport.

This is where our Cycle to Work Scheme could help. It is open all year round and you're sure to find whatever you need as you have access to an extensive supply network, including Evans, Cycle solutions and over 1,000 independent bike shops (including local independent stores).

What is a Cycle to Work Scheme?

The Council in partnership with Vivup has a government approved Cycle to Work Scheme which allows employees and Councillors (subject to qualifying criteria) to pay towards the hire of a bicycle and associated safety equipment whilst benefiting from savings on Income Tax and National Insurance through a salary sacrifice arrangement.

The scheme is a voluntary arrangement where the lease cost is deducted from the employee's gross pay in equal instalments over a 12 or 18 month period up to the value of £3,000 (including VAT).  This is on the condition that the lease is specifically for you and in order to qualify for tax relief, the bicycle/and or safety equipment is mainly used (at least 50% of its usage) for the purpose of commuting between your home and workplace, part of those journeys, or occasional work-related journeys. There is however no requirement for you to keep a log of these to comply with the scheme.

Vivup Cycle to Work Scheme

End of hire agreement period

At the end of the hire agreement period SME HCI Ltd (Vivup) will contact you outlining your options.

You should also be aware that an end of agreement fee is taken as a net deduction from your salary at the end of the 12 or 18 month hire agreement repayment period. This is necessary to ensure that the transfer is not treated as a taxable benefit to you under HMRC rules. More information can be found in the Cycle to Work Scheme guide.

Before you submit an order please ensure you read the scheme guide, terms and conditions and FAQ documents. Your personal circumstances may mean that entering into a salary sacrifice scheme is not beneficial for you.
