Family Group Decision-Making (FGDM)

FGDM is a strength-based approach which is designed to empower families to make a safe plan when there are concerns about a child or young person. It is a structured process that leads to a family group meeting, helping families to identify their own strengths and solutions, and mobilising resources and alliances in their identified network.

FGDM is recognised as a key whole-family, restorative approach, with a strong foundation in rights. It is a relational and strengths-based practice, that is effective at keeping children and young people at home within their families and/or communities, where it is safe to do so.

Professionally-led meetings and child protection systems can be difficult and scary for vulnerable families. FGDM is an important element in developing systems that are based on more positive relationships between professionals, families, and their wider network.
