Details

Purpose

Update members on pothole repairs across the Council area during the winter period.

Briefing information

The Council has recently received a number of enquiries with regard to a perceived increase in potholes across Perth and Kinross. This is not unexpected at this time of year, as the freeze/thaw process as well as frequent heavy rain over December /January has resulted in an increase in the number of potholes across the road network.

During the winter period, the Council undertakes a programme of winter maintenance, which is resource intensive, especially during times of inclement weather. The workforce that provide the winter service, including driving gritters and filling grit bins, is the same as that which undertakes the road resurfacing and patching works throughout the rest of the year. Therefore, the priority during periods of cold weather, has to be keeping the road network safe and moving.

Nevertheless, officers continue their planned programme of safety inspections and reacting to public reports of potholes on the road network. As you will be aware the Council have agreed intervention levels and repair times for pothole repairs, and not all reports of potholes will meet the level requiring repair. We currently have 64 reported locations awaiting assessment and a further 265 potholes awaiting repair.

Resources are now being deployed to address the increase and this will continue as the weather continues to improve. Anybody wishing to report a pothole can do so by visiting the Report a road or street lighting fault pages.
