Boost for sustainable community transport

We have today committed to purchase four 6 to 8-seater vehicles to support community transport initiatives in the area to encourage more sustainable forms of travel.

Funded through the almost £200,000 awarded to the Council by the Scottish Government's Community Bus Fund, it's hoped the vehicles will enable more communities to embrace local transport solutions like the successful Glenfarg Community Transport Group. The remaining funding will be used to invest in infrastructure to support the use of public and community transport, such as upgrading bus shelters.

Councillor Richard Watters, Convener of the Council's Climate Change and Sustainability Committee, said: "Perth and Kinross's unique blend of urban and rural areas needs a range of solutions if we're to make shared transport an attractive option for residents. The fantastic work being done through the Glenfarg Community Transport Group shows how community-led initiatives can be a really powerful tool.

"By working in partnership with local communities and providing practical alternatives to private car use, we're taking meaningful steps toward a greener, more sustainable Perth and Kinross."

Councillor Liz Barrett, Vice-Convener of Climate Change and Sustainability added: "The evidence is clear - fewer vehicles on the road is better for the environment, better for air quality and therefore health, and better for keeping residents connected. More community transport will give more residents access to more job and leisure opportunities across Perth and Kinross."

Delivery of the vehicles is subject to supplier timescales, in the meantime work is ongoing to identify community transport initiatives which will use these multi-person vehicles so that they can be up and running as quickly as possible.
