Environmental health - Infectious diseases

The Environmental Health team work in partnership with NHS Tayside Health Protection Team to investigate a range of infectious diseases identified in members of the public in Perth and Kinross.

If you are confirmed with an infectious disease by your GP, you will be contacted by either Perth & Kinross Council's Environmental Health or the Health Protection Team from NHS Tayside. In order to try and identify the source and prevent further spread officers will complete a surveillance form with you. Questions will relate to the typical sources of the infectious disease such as food or water consumed, contact with farm or domestic animals, travel and environmental exposures.

Officers will gather necessary information, provide advice on reducing the spread of infection to others and may also require that you are excluded from jobs that involve working with vulnerable people, handling food or those that work in high risk clinical and social care settings.

Examples of Infectious diseases that are investigated include: Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Yersinia, Cholera, Cyclospora, Legionella, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Typhoid, Paratyphoid and E. coli.

If you suspect you have an infectious disease, in the first instance we recommend you speak to your GP and submit a stool sample for analysis.

You are also encouraged to get in touch with the Food, Health and Safety team if you feel your illness may be as a result of food poisoning. Contact the Food Health and Safety Team at foodhealthsafety@pkc.gov.uk
