Perth sparkles as thousands celebrate Christmas Lights Switch-on weekend

Perth city centre was transformed into a festive wonderland as thousands gathered to celebrate the annual Christmas Lights Switch-on weekend.

The event marked the official start of the city's Christmas celebrations, bringing joy, free family fun and community spirit to the heart of Perth. It also delivered a welcome boost to local businesses, with thousands of visitors creating increased footfall across shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, reinforcing Perth as a vibrant destination for festive shopping and socialising.

The weekend featured electric performances from dance sensation Cascada, jiving Staying Alive, award-winning local band the Crom, alongside the rocking UK Rock Show, Unison Anthems, Beats of Brazil and Last Orders.

A magical moment unfolded when Nela, and Provost Xander McDade illuminated the city's festive lights, alongside her family and performers on the main stage in Tay Street.

In June 2025, Nela was seriously injured in the devastating Scott Street fire whilst being rescued from one of the top floor flats. She is recovering well and continues to receive care from NHS Tayside.  Two weeks later, their small dog, Vilo was rescued inside the very building that had been engulfed in flames on Scott Street, bringing a wave of pure joy and hope to the city.

Tay FMs popular presenters Gregor, Lynsey and Amber entertained the crowds on the two stages featuring brilliant local community groups and performers.

Families and shoppers enjoyed the bustling festive Christmas markets, featuring a wide range of local businesses.

Congratulations to the winners of our popular Cakefest Competition.  The award for Best Traditional cake and the award for Freestyle went two incredibly talented bakers. Each winner received £100 Perth City and Towns gift cards, while our runners up were rewarded with £50.00 gift cards.

Councillor Eric Drysdale, Leader of Perth and Kinross said: "It was fantastic to see so many families, friends, couples and people come together to celebrate the start of the festive season in Perth. The atmosphere was incredible, and we're proud to showcase our city as a vibrant destination for Christmas,"

"Looking ahead, I'd encourage everyone to shop local this festive season. With two free bus Saturdays on 6 and 20 December, it's even easier to support our fantastic businesses. Plus, our Christmas markets return for the final weekend in December, offering another chance to discover and enjoy the best of our area's incredible local businesses."
