Persons in detention or prison

If a member of your household is in detention or prison, you may be able to get a discount on your council tax bill.

You may be eligible for 25% discount if one adult remains resident in the property.  If there are other adults residing at the property, you may still be entitled to a discount depending on their circumstances.  Please contact Local Taxes on 01738 477430 for more information.

This discount reduces your Council Tax, water and sewerage charges.

Eligibility

To qualify you must be detained in a prison, hospital or other place by virtue of a court order in the UK.

Discount is not applicable if you are detained due to non-payment of fines.

How to apply

In order to complete our online application, you will be required to supply:

  • If a person is detained under the mental health act, you will also be required to have a disclosure mandate completed by the hospital confirming the date of admission and that the person is detained under the relevant Act of law. This can be downloaded from the website, or a request for this to be posted or emailed to you can be made within the application

Applications are now part of our wider 'Apply Once' application form where you can find out what other benefits, discounts and exemptions administered by the Council you're entitled to receive.

Complete our online application form

Alternatively, if you are unable to complete our online application, please download and complete the personal discount application (PDF, 830 KB)  and the Murray Royal disclosure mandate (PDF, 74 KB). These can be returned by post to Pullar House, 35 Kinnoull Street, Perth, PH1 5GD or by e-mail to localtaxes@pkc.gov.uk.

Please note that verification from the prison authority/hospital will be required before any discount or exemption can be awarded.
