Grit bins

We provide more than 1600 grit bins throughout Perth and Kinross to encourage self-help and where we are unable to treat minor roads routinely.

This large number reflects our desire to encourage self-help and our decision not to treat some minor roads routinely.

Grit bins are provided for use on public roads and not on private areas. Private occupiers should purchase salt from DIY stores and builders merchants for use on their own properties.

Grit bin enquiries

Let us know if a grit bin needs refilled, to report a damaged grit bin or if you want a grit bin relocated.

Damaged grit bin

The Council will review location, condition and salt levels in grit bins immediately prior to winter commencing. As it's the same staff who inspect the roads and instruct road works, defect repairs, gully emptying and respond to flooding we will not action any grit bin request between April and September unless it is a danger likely to cause loss or injury to the travelling public.

Grit bin refill

A bulk grit bin refill will be carried out in advance of winter and we aim to complete this by the end November each year. With over 1600 grit bins it does take a considerable time as most grit bins are in locations difficult to get a large vehicle too and so we require to service them with smaller vehicles which themselves require regular refilling.

During winter we will endeavour to refill grit bins as quickly as possible however as most are emptied  around the same time, most need refilled around the same time and as stated this can take time. The same road workers fill the grit bins as drive the gritters (and maintain your roads) and so are needed to do that, but we will utilise 3rd party private contractors where we can.

Alternatively, contact our Customer Service Centre on 01738 476476.  Unfortunately due to the volume of requests (often multiple requests from different residents) officers are unable to call back to discuss or update on the position with individual grit bins and we appreciate your patience while we work round this logistically challenging activity.
