Key findings

• 10.6 per cent of residents in Perth and Kinross were aged between 65 and 74 and a further 9.5 per cent aged over 75 years.  This compares to 9.1 per cent aged between 65 and 74 and 7.7 per cent aged 75 and over in Scotland as a whole.  The older age profile is reflected in that the average age of the population in Perth and Kinross is 43 years, slightly higher than the national average age of 40 years.
• Comparison with the 2001 Census suggests that the proportion of people aged 75 and over has increased slightly - from 8.8 per cent in 2001 to 9.5 per cent in 2011.
• The population of Perth and Kinross on Census day was 146,652.  This represents an increase of 8.7% compared to an increase in Scotland as a whole of 4.6%.  Comparison with other local authority areas suggests that, over this period, Perth and Kinross had the sixth fastest growing population in Scotland.
• Of the 5,295,403 residents in Scotland on Census Day, 48.5% were male and 51.5% female.  The gender split was broadly similar in Perth and Kinross where 48.7% were male and 51.3% were female.
• A comparison of the age profile of Perth and Kinross and the age profile of Scotland shows that there is a higher proportion of older age groups (65+) resident in Perth and Kinross with 18.1% of the population being 65+ compared to 10.6% in Scotland as a whole.
