The GIRFEC approach is enshrined in the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, and is underpinned by values and principles which are based upon the Children's Charter and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Important among these values and principles are:
- Promoting the wellbeing of children and young people
- Keeping children and young people safe
- Putting the wellbeing of the child or young person at the centre of thinking
- Building on their strengths and promoting resilience
- Providing additional help that is appropriate, proportionate and timely
- Working in partnership with families, respecting confidentiality and sharing information
No matter where they live or whatever their needs, children, young people and families should know that they can find help when they need it and that the right support will be available to them.
