Your rights affect you in more ways than you could ever know. Your ability to live your life and make decisions about how you live your life at school, home, your local youth club or anywhere is completely dependent on your rights.
Full list of your rights
For a full list of your rights in pictures you can visit the Children & Young People's Commissioner Scotland website.
However, here is a shortlist of some of your rights from the UNCRC:
- The right to be protected from any form of discrimination
- The right to a good enough standard of living
- The right to an education
- The right to be listened to and taken seriously on all matters affecting you
- The right to be able to join in things as long as you don't endanger or threaten others
- The right to be protected from abuse from your parents or carers
- Parents should work together to do what is best for you
- The right to special help and care if you can't live with your family
- The right to use your own language and enjoy the culture of your own community in Scotland
- The right to protection from sexual exploitation
- If you have been treated badly you should be helped to recover
If you feel like you are being treated unfairly or if you feel your rights are being ignored it is everyone's job to make sure that you are OK.
If you feel you need help or support it is best if you can tell someone who you know and trust. If one of these people are part of the problem you may like to speak with someone who is completely independent and has nothing to do with the situation you are in.
