Training and learning
Supporting Older People to Live Active Healthy Lives - TURAS
This learning programme makes use of resources developed as part of the Care about Physical Activity (CA PA) programme which was run by Scotland's Care Inspectorate, together with other online videos and resources. This learning programme was developed by Professor Dawn Skelton at Glasgow Caledonian University for CA PA.
Scottish Social Services Council (S SSC) Open Badges
Care Inspectorate have now launched, in partnership with S SSC, a series of open badges on different aspects of meaningful connection. The badges provide an opportunity for staff to reflect upon, develop, and evidence their understanding of and commitment to supporting meaningful connection in day to day practice. They will also be helpful for employers to use as part of staff training and development, and for staff to evidence their continuous professional learning. The badges are geared towards staff working in care homes for adults and older people but will also be of interest to those working in other services.
Volunteering
Duke of Edinburgh Awards in Care Homes
The Perth and Kinross Duke of Edinburgh Awards Association supports young people with additional support needs across the council to attain their Dove award and other wider achievements.
We would be delighted to offer our volunteering services initially to Perth city centre care homes. Volunteers could help with care home gardens and maintenance while also supporting activities that combat loneliness and isolation from playing games such as bingo or taking part in arts and crafts or being that friendly person to chat too.
Over the last year we have partnered with the sheltered housing in Bridgend to support the residents in maintaining their gardens. This has helped us build an intergenerational network between the young people and the residents, with positive benefits to both. The young people have grown in confidence when meeting new people while fostering new relationships. The residents have enjoyed seeing the young people in the garden, speaking with them, and listening to the noise generated by them, it makes their day!
