Positive feedback for Kirkmichael Primary School in inspection report

A recent Education Scotland inspection of Kirkmichael Primary School in Perthshire has found a number of important strengths in the work of the school and made positive evaluations of key elements of its performance.

The inspection in Autumn 2024 particularly praised:

  • Staff and children taking account of children's rights in all that they say and do; and polite, articulate children who showed kindness and respect between themselves and to adults, leading to a warm, welcoming school ethos.
  • Highly motivated children who engage well in learning that reflects on the school's local context, helping them make good progress in literacy and numeracy.
  • A staff team committed to helping all children achieve to their fullest, with teachers and support staff working very effectively together to plan and deliver learning that meets the needs of children who require support.

Education Scotland also assessed the school against key national quality indicators, rating it 'good' on both learning, teaching and assessment and raising attainment and achievement.

Two areas for improvement were identified by the inspection team and discussed with the headteacher and Council officers:

  • Continued work to develop the school's approaches to learning, teaching and assessment to ensure all children experience consistently high-quality learning and are fully challenged in their learning to keep raising literacy and numeracy attainment.
  • Further development of tracking and monitoring of children's progress across all curriculum areas and greater use of data by the school's teaching staff to identify ways to close attainment gaps.

Education Scotland, being satisfied that Kirkmichael Primary School can continue to improve, will make no further visits to the school in connection with this inspection.

Convener of Families and Learning, Councillor John Rebbeck said: "This report makes for positive reading for the whole school community and reflects the commitment and motivation of staff and children alike. As a Council we will ensure parents and carers are kept informed of the school's progress through our normal reporting arrangements."
