Prepared for winter

As the festive holidays draw nearer, the Council is doing all it can to be prepared for the impact of winter.

Winter planning arrangements have been in place for several weeks, with the option to activate out of hours arrangements for roads maintenance should forecast conditions require this.

More than 10,000 tonnes of road salt are already in Council depots throughout the Perth and Kinross area, with a further 5,650 tonnes provisionally ordered for supply in January 2025. Over 5,000 sandbags have been prepared and are being kept in readiness for any flooding events.

As well as winter roads maintenance, the Council also has staff prepared to respond to other emergency situations, and to support the 56 Community Resilience Groups (CRGs) that now operate in communities around Perth and Kinross.

The CRGs will be alerted in the event of weather warnings by staff from our Parking and Civil Contingencies team and information gathered on the support and assistance they could provide if required.

Out of hours arrangements will also be in place for Health and Social Care/ social work, emergency repairs and homelessness.

Councillor Eric Drysdale, the Council's Convener of Economy and Infrastructure said: "In Perth and Kinross we are very familiar with the impact of winter weather on our roads and our communities. It's critical that we are all prepared to deal with these kinds of situations, and we and our partners including volunteers in the 56 local community resilience groups that have now been established are focussed on providing support where and when it is needed.

"I would encourage residents to do whatever they can to be ready for winter and also encourage anyone with a car to park considerately and leave enough space for larger vehicles like gritters, bin lorries and emergency vehicles to get through."

Out of hours emergency contact numbers for the Council are available at our Contact Us page.

Information about readiness for winter emergencies and winter roads maintenance is available on our Emergencies and Gritting and snow clearing pages respectively.
