Perth People Place

The way we live, travel and work is changing.

The pandemic accelerated this process with more people working, at least some of the time, from home while climate emergency makes encouraging walking, wheeling and cycling ever more important.

Perth People Place will respond to those changes and improve sustainable transport and active travel.

This will be achieved by creating more sustainable travel routes between rural areas, edge of city neighbourhoods and Perth City Centre and developing "liveable neighbourhoods" where amenities and services are accessible or located within a 20 minute return-walk or wheel from home.

These measures need to be designed along with the communities they will serve, as well as with organisations such as Sustrans.

The changes brought about by the pandemic have given us the opportunity to engage with our residents on these plans.

What are we doing?

The Dunkeld Road Corridor Neighbourhood (North Muirton, Muirton, Balhousie) is the first project to be developed through the Perth People Place Programme, to invest in sustainable transport corridors across the city, connecting places and people.

This consists of multiple communities and the Corridor is being developed as part of plan to link the City Centre, Bertha Park, Luncarty and the wider rural communities.

It will:

• Deliver safer, more accessible and more inclusive environments for sustainable travel
• Reduce the need for carbon-based travel
• Create spaces for use by the public and businesses, producing conditions for both to thrive
• Improve integration between active travel modes and public transport

Initial funding has now been secured to take forward the design development of the Dunkeld Road Corridor which will more accurately determine the level of funding required for implementation.

An initial public engagement on the Dunkeld Road Corridor was held in October and November 2022.  

We will continue to work with communities to co-design the project over the next six to eight months before full, detailed technical designs are produced ahead of construction starting in 2023.
