Planning Guidance - Gypsy/Traveller Site Standards

Purpose and Scope of Guidance

Local Development Plan 2 Policy 21 sets out that existing Gypsy/Traveller sites will be protected while proposals for new private sites will be supported on land that is not allocated for another purpose.

The Gypsy/Traveller Site Standards Guidance Note (PDF) [306KB] provides advice on when a planning application is required for a private Gypsy/Traveller site or pitch and gives detail on what applications should contain.

This document was consulted on in 2022 and adopted on 29 March 2023.

Strategic Environmental Assessment

As part of the process we have to consult NatureScot, SEPA and Historic Environment Scotland on whether the plan, programme or strategy is likely to raise issues of significant environmental impact.

We sent our  SEA Screening Report (PDF) [216KB]  to the consultation authorities on 6 January 2022 to help determine whether the guidance is likely to have significant effects on the environment. The consultation authorities have assessed the screening report and agreed that the guidance is unlikely to have any significant effects on the headline environmental issues. A  Screening Determination (PDF) [177KB]  was issued to the SEA gateway on 8 March 2022.
