Food safety management systems
It is a legal requirement in terms of food hygiene legislation for all food businesses within the United Kingdom to put in place a Food Safety management System based on the principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).
Food hygiene information scheme
Scottish consumers can see how well food businesses in their area have fared in their last food hygiene inspection.
Complaints about food
Complaints can relate to any aspect of the food including the presence of foreign bodies, fitness for consumption, labelling and alleged food poisoning etc.
Complaints about food businesses
In addition to routine food inspections, the food team will respond to complaints about the hygiene standards of individual premises or other food facilities such as market stalls and mobile vendors.
Sampling of Food
Complaints about food or complaints about food businesses are investigated to ensure that food safety is not being compromised by poor operating standards or lack of an appropriate Food safety Management System in food businesses.
Food poisoning
The food team have a statutory duty in terms of the Public Health Act 2008, to co-operate with the NHS, particularly the Health Protection Team and the Consultant in Public Health Medicine to investigate and prevent the spread of communicable diseases including food poisoning.

The Food Information (Scotland) Regulations 2014 set out the requirements for food labelling.
