Sustainable food

In relation to procurement activities relating to food, the Council will consider how to procure sustainably grown food which represents value for money whilst improving the health, wellbeing and education of communities in our area and promoting the highest standards of animal welfare.

A large proportion of the Council's requirement for food is to provide school meals. The food sourced for these meals is done in collaboration with all 32 local authorities in Scotland, through Scotland Excel. This joint working has led to greater opportunities to influence the supply chain and develop sustainable offerings through the contracts.

For example, in the sourcing of groceries, the origin of products was captured through the tender process and will be tracked during the life of the framework through quarterly management information returns.

Further sustainability benefits are likely to be captured through the life of the framework through planned core product reviews to further increase the number of locally sourced products.

Suppliers have also offered solutions to assist councils in reducing their food waste, tasking their supply chains with reducing case sizes and packs to help smaller authorities and rural schools and collecting food waste to be passed to local farmers as animal feed ensuring that food waste is kept to a minimum.
