Environmental health - Sewerage, drainage, and septic tanks

As a significant part of Perth and Kinross comprises rural areas there can be issues with drainage and private sewerage systems. It is the responsibility of landowners/occupiers to ensure that they maintain private drains and tanks within the curtilage of their property.

This includes all the pipework within the property. Beyond the boundary of properties Scottish Water are likely to be responsible. More information on waste water can be found at  Your Waste Water - Scottish Water

Urban properties

Properties such as flats, terraced houses or older properties are more likely to have a shared water pipe which may result in joint responsibility with neighbours.

The Environmental Health Team may utilise powers on private residences to carry out improvements, repair work or the replacement of private drains if there is a risk to human health or the issue is causing odour problems.

If you are connected to mains drainage and having issues beyond the curtilage of your property it is advised to contact Scottish Water on 0800 0778 778 or through the Scottish Water online portal

Rural properties

Rural properties with private or shared sewage treatment system sewerage have a responsibility to maintain the system and any pipework to and from the system.

Please contact Environmental Health at eh@pkc.gov.uk or 01738 476476 if you identify concerns.
