Digital technology is an integral part of the lives of children, young people and families across Perth and Kinross. Used responsibly, digital devices such as phones and tablets can be powerful tools to enhance learning and teaching, communication, and social experiences, and may remove barriers to learning for some children and young people.
However, there is a growing evidence base that, when used inappropriately, digital devices are causing disruption to children and young people's learning and that of their peers.
In August 2024, the Scottish Government published their mobile phones guidance for Scotland's schools. This provided schools and local authorities with advice on the development and updating of local policies relating to the use of mobile phones and other digital devices in schools.
Our personal mobile device policy for schools (PDF, 508 KB) has been developed in conjunction with a range of stakeholders including staff, children and young people and their parents/carers and is designed to support school leaders to implement approaches within their own settings. It provides clear information and guidance on the safe, responsible, and legal use of mobile technology, supporting calm and inclusive learning environments that are fully focussed on learning and teaching. It will support the appropriate use of mobile technology to enhance learning whilst protecting staff, children, and young people from the consequences of inappropriate use and abuse.
