Research shows that when parents are involved, children do better and achieve more.
We know from National research that children do better at school, and achieve more in life when parents and schools work together. Only 15% of a child's life is spent at school, and so it is very clear that parents have the most influential role in a child's education. In working together we will aim to ensure that every child does the best they can at school and beyond. The Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement Act) 2006 aims to support and encourage more families to become involved in the education of their children and the School curriculum.
There are three main levels of engagement with parents described in the Act:
- Learning at Home
- Home/School Partnership
- Parental Representation
Parents are recognised as the primary educators of their children and so positive relationships built on mutual trust, respect and effective partnership are required to achieve positive outcomes. This is reflected in the principles identified in the Tayside Strategy for Parents 2019-2024.
The Perth and Kinross Parental Involvement and Engagement Strategy for 2023 - 2026 (PDF, 334 KB) was approved by Learning and Families Committee on 23 August 2023.
We have also worked closely with Headteachers and parent representatives to establish 79 Parent Councils in our schools.

Parents, carers and family members are by far the most important influences on their children's lives. By becoming involved in the life of your child's school or nursery you can show your child that their education is important to you.

As part of the Parental Involvement and Engagement Strategy 2023-26, Education and Learning committed to providing parents and families with the right support and information to enable parents to engage in their child's learning and understand children's rights.
We are keen to learn from you about what type of information you require and would find useful and where you would prefer to access this information.
