Allotments and growing spaces - Funding

There are a number of possible funding sources for help when setting up an allotment, community garden or other growing project.

Perth and Kinross grants direct is the local one-stop-shop providing information, advice and support to find and apply for funding. Find out more about Council funding streams and read the monthly funding alert for external opportunities.

Some examples that could help your food growing project:

  • Our community environment challenge fund is granted for community projects with tangible physical improvements that can be completed within 2 years.  Applications must be submitted by local or national constituted groups (including those acting on behalf of others) and must be developed by community or voluntary organisations.
  • Through our sustainable procurement and community benefits scheme, local communities or organisations can submit a request for specific help via the community benefits wish list form. This can include requests for sponsorship, donations of material or labour, presentations, work experience or any community related help.  All our contract tenders which exceed £50k are eligible for delivering community benefits.   • The Tayside Contracts Community Fund (opens new window) is available to provide free civil engineering services for community projects. Examples of the services, include path maintenance, providing signage and providing food hygiene or food nutrition training.
  • SCVO Funding Scotland (opens new window) can help rural, urban and local communities with small grants or big capital projects and lists recently opened funds as they are made available.
  • The B&Q Community Reuse Scheme/In Kind Direct donate products to re-use by schools and community groups. If your growing group is looking for tools, these schemes may be able to help. Visit your nearest B&Q shop or visit the B&Q In Kind Direct (opens new window) website for more information.
  • The National Lottery Community Fund has various programmes that suits small or large funding opportunities for community- led projects. Visit their The National Lottery (opens new window) to understand what funding your project is eligible for.
  • The Tree Council's Orchards for Schools (opens new window) is a funding opportunity provided for schools to create orchards and fruiting hedgerows. You can register an interest on the website.
  • For schools, the Nature Grant fund from Learning Through Landscapes might be a useful starting place for funding if you'd like to get started this year. The Local School Nature Grants Scheme gives access to £500 worth of outdoor resources, which can be chosen from a mix of over 100 different products. The Local School's Nature Grant programme usually has 4 rounds per year in April, June, September and November.
  • Crowdfunding is an alternative way of raising money for great ideas from the people around you. Crowdfund Scotland helps people in Scotland with an idea that can transform their community. Have a look at their website for past projects related to food growing.
