Managers resourcing toolbox - Guidance for employing apprentices, graduates and trainees

Apprenticeships/Graduate and Trainee roles offer young people the opportunity to develop both their vocational and personal skills in a working environment. Through structured training they will gain practical experience of a job whilst often obtaining a qualification/further qualification.

Recruiting a graduate apprentice, graduate trainee or professional trainee

When considering offering any graduate apprenticeship/graduate work experience or professional trainee opportunity, it is advisable to talk this through with your HR Services team and/or HR employability team to consider all available options and ensure you are offering the best opportunity to fit the needs of your team and any workforce plans.

Recruiting a Modern Apprentice

The recruitment of all Modern Apprentices is managed by the HR Employability Team who will work with you whilst managing relations with Skills Development Scotland (SDS), Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and training providers throughout the term of your apprentices' employment.   Further guidance is available at:

Progression for Modern Apprentices

When a Modern Apprentice has progressed satisfactorily through their qualification and gained sufficient experience in their role, they are invited to join the Councils Job Academy, giving them ring fenced access to suitable entry level vacancies.  Further information on the Job Academy is explained during the apprentices Induction and at review meetings throughout their employment.  Guidance for managers can also be found below:

Celebrating our Modern Apprentices

We celebrate the achievements of our Modern Apprentices with regular internal communications.  In March each year, during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we also announce our Modern Apprentice of the Year.  This is your opportunity to showcase a young person who makes a valuable contribution in and out with work.  Nominations forms will be sent out in January each year to all supervisors whose apprentice has achieved within the previous year.
