Child Impact Assessments: The Toolkit

The work on Child Impact Assessments is laid out within Prison Reform Trust's toolkit (opens new window).  Initially developed to support children with a mother in the justice system, all the information within the toolkit also applies to children whose fathers are in the justice system, and the resources have been adapted accordingly. Guiding principles

The CIA Guiding Principles (PDF, 137 KB) document provides a summary of guiding principles for supporting for children with a parent in the criminal justice system, which place their best interests at heart.

Information sharing pathway

We have put together the following set of questions to help you decide if it is appropriate to share requested information.

Question 1

Has a child identified an action in their Child Impact Assessment that needs to be followed up outwith your setting, or they have asked their Assessment to be shared?

If No: Do not share. Explain to the child or young person why you cannot share.

If Yes: Go to Question 2.

If Not Sure: Check with your line manager.

Question 2

Do you have informed consent as outlined in your organisational guidelines?

If No: Check with your line manager.

If Yes: Go to Question 3.

Question 3

Could sharing information from the Assessment lead to any unexpected problems or harm?

If No: You can share the relevant section of the CIA. If the child asks for it, and it is appropriate to do so, you can share the whole document.

If Yes: Do not share. Explain to the child or young person why you cannot share.

 

*Information relating to child or adult protection issues should be immediately discussed and actioned under existing procedures
