Holocaust Memorial Day 2025

Perth and Kinross Council is showing its support for the national Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration on Monday 27 January 2025, which this year has the theme of 'For a better future'.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp pf the Holocaust, during which 6 million Jews were murdered. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Provost of Perth and Kinross, Xander McDade, said: "It is important that we learn from and about the past and take steps to make a better future for everyone.

"By dispelling the darkness of prejudice and hatred we can bear witness for the communities who suffered attempted genocide across the world, speak up against the denial and distortion of these horrendous occurrences, challenge prejudice and encourage others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides."

The Council's Equalities Lead, Councillor Peter Barrett added: "Coming together enables us to highlight that these kinds of events should never be allowed to happen again, and to honour the survivors and everyone whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

"I would encourage our residents to show their support and light the darkness, by placing a candle in their window at 8pm on Monday."

Perth Bridge and St Paul's Church in the city centre will also be lit up in purple on Monday evening.
