Elected Member Briefing Note 2024, No. 112

About this Briefing Note

Report by: Rick Haynes, Flooding Manager

Date: 3 December 2024

Subject: Canal Street sinkhole

Details

Purpose

This Briefing Note provides an update on action being taken following the appearance of a sinkhole on Canal Street in Perth on Monday.

Briefing Information

A sinkhole appeared in the carriageway on Canal Street between Princes Street and Scott Street on Monday (02 December 2024).

Early investigations indicate the sinkhole is around 1.5 metres deep. It is in the left-hand lane opposite the vehicle exit of the Canal Street multi-storey car park.

This lane was closed on Monday to make the area safe for motorists and cyclists using the carriageway.

A full investigation is now underway to determine the extent of the damage beneath the surface and if this is related to the culverted Lade below.

Once this has been determined the surface of the carriageway will be removed, any damage repaired and the road surface reinstated.

Tayside Contracts will carry out the repairs but until the location is made safe and investigations are completed it too early to know how long these will take.

As one lane has been closed, it is likely there will be delays to traffic in Perth city centre until repairs are completed.
