Purpose

This short briefing is to inform you about the local impact of Storm Bert so far.

Briefing Information

The Amber weather alert for snow and ice that was in place today for areas of northern and western Perthshire until 5pm today (Saturday 23 November) has now been lifted by the Met Office. A Yellow alert for wind is in place until 5pm today.

Another Yellow alert for rain and snow remains in place across the region until 9am on Sunday 24. Perth and Kinross saw significant snowfall this morning, easing into rain in the early afternoon. Incident Management Team meetings were held this morning and this afternoon to evaluate the situation on the ground and discuss any required responses.

There is no major disruption to report at this time. The snowfall caused some issues on roads across the area during the morning, with driving conditions difficult. Our Parking staff have been out helping motorists who found themselves stuck in the snow. The condition of the roads also caused some disruption to the bus network.

The roads are expected to improve as we move through the day, although surface water may be an issue due to thaw. Gritting lorries remain out on our road network treating main routes.

There was also some disruption to scheduled waste collections in Crieff, Blairgowrie and Pitlochry. Auchterarder Recycling Centre had to close for a short time, but was able to reopen.

The floodgates at South Inch remain closed, as does the flood mitigation scheme at Almondbank. Predictions on water volume does not require the closure of any other flood gates at this time, although this is being closely monitored.

Staff have been in regular dialogue with our Community Resilience Groups to offer any support that is needed and to find out about any local issues that need our attention. All services remain ready to respond to any further disruption. No additional IMT meetings are planned for today, but senior staff from all services will continue regular dialogue about the situation.
